Frequently asked questions

Nora is made by Nora Languages AB, a small team in Stockholm led by founder William Westerlund, who built it after years of studying Japanese and freezing when it was time to speak.

ChatGPT is a general assistant. Nora is built only for speaking practice. She speaks both your languages in one voice, with a native accent in each, and you can tap any word in her replies to look it up and save it. She remembers your level, your goals and your actual mistakes, and brings those mistakes back in later conversations until you get them right. Your corrections become flashcards, and guided lessons and story adventures give you something real to say.

Nora uses leading models from Google and OpenAI, each for the job it does best: one writes the tutor's replies, a realtime speech model runs voice calls, and dedicated speech recognition listens for exactly your two languages. If one provider has a problem, the tutor switches to a backup automatically. For Japanese, Korean and Chinese, word lookups come from real dictionaries, not from the AI guessing.

Nora follows the level you choose, from 'New to the language' to advanced, and keeps to the language mix you set. She corrects you the way you prefer, remembers what you got wrong last time, and changes course when you ask, for example 'slower' or 'only Japanese please'. Changes to how she teaches are tested against simulated learners before they ship.

For many learners, yes: unlimited speaking practice, instant feedback and lessons at your level, without the cost or scheduling of weekly sessions. And when you do talk with a teacher or native friends, you arrive warmed up and confident. Many learners use both: Nora for daily speaking practice, a tutor for occasional deep dives.

Yes. Fluency comes from speaking, and most courses give you very little of it: you spend your study time reading about the language instead of using it. Nora flips that. From your first session you are talking out loud, in text or in a voice call, and getting corrections in the style you choose. Nora remembers your mistakes and brings them back until you get them right.

You practise real conversation: free talk about anything, roleplays like ordering at a restaurant or checking into a hotel, story adventures where what you say moves the plot, and voice calls where you can interrupt Nora just like on the phone. She corrects you as you go, the words you save and the mistakes you make become flashcards, and she brings them back in later conversations.

It depends on the language and on how often you practise. Consistency matters more than session length: a short conversation every day beats a long one once a week. Nora keeps track of your speaking time, saved words and streak, and shows you when a mistake you used to make is resolved.

Yes, even if you are starting from zero. Guided lessons in all 8 languages start from absolute beginner (JLPT N5, TOPIK 1, HSK 1 or A1): you learn three phrases, rehearse them, then use them in a scene set in a real city. In conversation, choose 'New to the language' and Nora leads one small step at a time, with as much English as you need.

That plateau is exactly what Nora is built for. Knowing grammar and vocabulary but freezing in real conversation is one of the most common problems in language learning, and the fix is speaking more. Nora gives you a low-pressure space to form sentences out loud, make mistakes without embarrassment, and get natural corrections that stick.

Lessons are guided and start from day one: you learn three phrases, rehearse them, then use them in a scene, such as ordering food in Tokyo or asking prices in Madrid. Adventures are stories you play by talking. Characters have their own voices, what you say completes the objectives, and your choices change the ending. Both work in the apps and on the web.

Yes, two ways. In any conversation you can use push-to-talk and Nora replies out loud, with a full transcript you can replay at normal or slow speed. Or start a voice call: a live conversation that feels like a phone call, where you can interrupt her, ask her to slow down or switch to more English, and she keeps up. Voice calls work in the iOS and Android apps and on the web.

Nora can switch languages in the middle of a sentence, in one voice, with a native accent in each language. She can explain a tricky grammar point in English and carry straight on in Japanese, the way a bilingual tutor would. How much of each language she uses is up to you: the language mix setting goes from mostly English to target language only, and she sticks to it. You can speak to her in either language too.

Yes. Nora is on the App Store and Google Play, and in your browser at app.hellonora.ai. One account works everywhere, and your conversations, saved words, flashcards and streak sync between your phone and the web.

Nora works in current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. Allow microphone access when your browser asks, so you can speak to Nora and start voice calls. On a phone, the iOS and Android apps give you the best experience.

Yes. Both plans start with a 7-day free trial with full access. A card is required to start it, and you can cancel anytime before it ends without being charged. After the trial it is $16.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed annually. There is no free plan, but you can talk to Nora in a short welcome call right after you sign up, before you choose a plan.

Cancel wherever you subscribed. In the iPhone app, cancel in your iPhone Settings under Subscriptions. In the Android app, cancel in the Google Play Store under Payments & subscriptions. On the web, go to Settings, then Subscription, then Manage Subscription. You keep access until the end of the period you have paid for. Deleting your Nora account does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription, so cancel in the store first.
